What's a good defense weapon to fend off a dog attack?

I was thinking an expandable baton but apparently they are illegal to carry in my state (oklahoma). Any other suggestions besides a pocket knife? Knife will be last resort because I want to avoid killing a dog unless it's life-and-death situation, and you have to get too close to use it
